Dell R650 updating BIOS via iDRAC Direct

This document describes a more straightforward procedure for updating the TAG-approved BIOS configuration for the MCM9000 for the Dell R650 Server.

Please note this procedure requires a Windows Laptop, a Micro USB cable in good condition capable of Data connections, and the TAG MCM 9000 iDRAC System XML below.

  1. Referencing the web pages below, you can disable ALL network adapters on the laptop.  Then, connect the Micro USB to the front of the Dell R650 Server.

  1. Connect to the web interface by clicking the “Advanced” button:

  1. In web UI, the user is either “Root” and the password is “Calvin” or they are on the service TAG in front of the server.  Do not change the default password unless coordinated with the Customer.

  1. Use the Search function on the top right to search for “Import”.

  1. Import the Configuration using the below settings:

  1. A Pop-up will appear asking if you want to be redirected to the Jobs page.  Click on it to go to the Jobs Page:

  1. Once the Status reads “20%,” you can move on to the next server if you update multiple servers.  The current server will continue to set its configurations.  This can take up to 5 or 10 minutes.

  1. When importing the iDRAC configuration, XML doesn’t automatically assign the boot order to boot using the TAG MCM Dongle.  Therefore, the final step is to manually navigate to set the Boot Order to boot of the “C:” as it should recognize this as the MCM Dongle.

  1. Save the BIOS Configuration and exit the BIOS, and the Server should Reboot into the MCM.
